Shakila ji remembers, “My ancestors belonged to the royal families of Afghanistan and Iran. I was born on 1 January 1936 in the Middle East. My paternal grandparents and mother were killed during family feuds over the throne. I was the eldest among three sisters. Taking us children along, my father and my aunt (father’s sister) came to Mumbai to save their lives. I was around 4 years old at that time.”
During this time, she also acted with Dev Anand in ‘CID’ (1956), with Sunil Dutt in ‘Post Box 999’ (1958), with Raj Kapoor in ‘Shriman Satyawadi’ (1960), with Manoj Kumar in ‘Reshmi Rumal’ (1961) and with Shammi Kapoor in ‘China Town’ (1962). In spite of these movies, her public image remained that of a Fantasy Movie Heroine. Veteran film historian and a pillar of “Beete Hue Din”, the Surat based Shri Harish Raghuvanshi estimates that during her 14 year long career Shakila acted in 72 movies. Her last release was in 1963 in the form of ‘Ustaadon Ke Ustaad’.
